THE BLURB

There's a dead body in Perry Foster's bathtub. A dead body in a very ugly sports coat--and matching socks. The dead man is a stranger to Perry, but that's not much of a comfort; how did a strange dead man get in a locked flat at the isolated Alton Estate in the wilds of the "Northeast Kingdom" of Vermont? Perry flees downstairs to get help and runs into "tall, dark and hostile" former navy SEAL Nick Reno.

Reno doesn't have a lot of time for drama queens, but, convinced that Perry's jitters are based on something more than caffeine overdose, he heads upstairs to investigate. By then the body has disappeared. If there's one thing Nick has learned the hard way, it's to mind his own business. But Perry Foster doesn't believe in ghosts and isn't willing to let sleeping dead men lie. And Nick just can't convince himself to walk when it's becoming increasingly obvious someone wants the sexy young artist out of the way -- permanently.

THE REVIEW

Returning home unexpectedly after being dumped by a man that he met online whom he thought was his forever love, our shy librarian Perry Foster was in no mood for what awaited him in his room, a body in his tub. The dead man disappeared just as quickly when Perry rushed downstairs to get help, and no one believed his story. Since there was no body the Police think he's either a nutcase or drunk. But mild mannered, asthmatic Perry was determined to prove the doubters wrong and find the body as well as the perpetrator of this dastardly deed. He found an ally in an unlikely person, Nick Reno, a former Navy SEAL who, like everyone else, had difficulty believing Perry's story, at first.

The first thing that struck me about this book was its atmosphere. It reminded me of a 1940s film noir with all of the elements that a film buff would expect of the era and the genre - dark, mysterious, shadows everywhere with dubious characters that are sometimes ominous and threatening. The house where everyone lived was the former mansion of a Hollywood celebrity and her husband decades ago, now it is reduced to being a seedy boarding house with a big secret but also poor lighting, bad heating and ventilation, and the landlady from hell. The story is full of quirky characters down on their luck (why else would someone live in a boarding house) all of whom have muddy pasts, their own secrets and possible motives to commit a murder or two. Inside the house where the temperature was almost as frigid as the outdoors, this friendly mob try to stay warm and remain alive as other motives emerge that might tempt their neighbours to commit more dastardly crimes. Greed is such a compelling motivation.

Perry's and Nick's relationship was unique and at times one sided. Nick was moving to another state in a couple of weeks and he did not want to give Perry any hope of a possible future for them, but Perry, the little charmer, had his own plans and I loved the way his character became dominant and manipulative at times and Nick could only go along for the ride. Nick was quite willing to help with the murder investigation but that was as far as he was prepared to go.

Whenever I read a Josh Lanyon murder mystery I pay attention because I want to solve the crime before the end of the book. This author always introduces many characters in his mysteries, any one of whom could be the killer, and false clues abound as he tries to confound his readers and outwit them as they encounter many phony trails that lead nowhere. Usually I'm pretty good at solving mysteries having done so for decades in books, but this time I have to admit that I was almost stumped as I got closer to the end of the story, with few suspects left, when I eventually solved the crime. I could tell you whodunit but I would have to kill you. If possible it is my humble opinion that the author is getting better at constructing his mysteries, and he sucks the readers in by letting them think they have the perpetrator nailed, before he makes fools of us all yet again.

What did I love best about The Ghost Wore Yellow Socks? Always the characters which is where Josh Lanyon excels and he seems to outdo himself with every new story. Perry reminded me of Clark Kent with his mild mannered persona that's smart, clever and stubborn and he seemed to have certain similarities to another famous amateur sleuth in JL's books, but when he's in full Superman mode he's totally unstoppable. Nick Reno who is his foil in this story and ultimately his love interest, is no match for Perry intellectually or in street smarts, even though he is physically stronger and has the usual attributes of a former Navy SEAL - brave, intrepid and great investigative skills

This book proves once again what a master craftsman this author is in character and plot development. None of the characters was "over the top" although each one was quite distinctive; the flow of the story was beautifully done as the tension mounted and the personalities morphed before my eyes when the stress became too much for their fragile psyches. Reading a murder mystery is always a journey for me rather than a destination and The Ghost Wore Yellow Socks provided a wonderfully crafted map to the final goal of solving the crime. I think readers will find that the best part of this book is not the satisfaction of unraveling the clues and identifying the perpetrator (if you do get there) but the wonderful prose of this skillful and talented author who has given me hours of enjoyment as I journey through his world.

The Ghost Wore Yellow Socks
is definitely a 'keeper" and I highly recommend it, even if you're not a fan of murder mysteries.

I bought this book just haven't had time to read it. Looks like I will have to find the time soon.

Wow Shawn that was fast. I just posted this review a moment ago. I really loved this book and all the quirky characters and I think you will too.

I just have to say that I really enjoyed this book! Perry and Nick had a wonderful chemistry and their relationship grew perfectly.
When the book first came out it kept me up all night and made me miss one of my own deadlines, but it was utterly worth it.

Really, I thing all of Josh's writing is worth buying and reading over and over. I'm completely in awe of his mastery of character... and now I'm going to stop gushing! I'm sure there are plenty of others who will carry on in my stead. *g*

LOL, sorry, Wave, I just happened to be speeding by when I noticed the review and knew I had the book.
One of my first loves is murder mysteries so I am sure I will really like it

jessewave said...

No problem Ginn. I deleted one of them. Josh is such a master at creating characters that I love or hate, and I have loved every one of his books that I have read so far.

jessewave said...

Shawn It is an exceptional book with lots of atmosphere *g*

Well I'm definitely a fan of murder mysteries so I am putting this on my list for next time I go on a shopping trip. :-) The problem with on-line shopping, my restraint is practically nil. Can't use the excuse of bad weather to stay home and not spend money, but sounds like this one will be worth it. Great review.

I have a love/hate relationship with Josh's work.

Love because plot, writing, characters, crime/mystery storylines, etc are all terrific. Hate because I inevitably want to reach in and slap one of the main characters silly, which is always how I know that Josh has sucked me in yet again. *sigh*

I'm probably one of the few, who are still majorly pissed with you-know-who from DOPK. *mutter-the undeserving prick-mutter*

Tam
Thank you. I tried to capture the elements in the book without giving away too much because with a murder mystery the last thing you want to do is spoil the book for the reader. I hope I succeeded. Sometimes the murders themselves are only incidental and are used to showcase the characters and how they fall apart as the story develops.

Kris

Josh is going to be guest blogging here tomorrow and he's talking about villains. Why don't you talk to him about his famous villain? I hope to see you on the blog.

Personally I love Jake the anti hero more than Adrien *g*

Kris said...

How any of you can like Jake is beyond me!

The man is a ***** who ***** self denial, which almost ***** Adrien!

(*Note: words deleted to avoid spoilers.)

Tam said...

Wow Kris, how do you really feel? LOL Can't wait for you and Josh to duke it out tomorrow. Ring side seat for me. ;-)

jessewave said...

Kris
You should really watch that blood pressure and scrub your mouth out with soap.*g*

I do so love Jake baby :)

Kris said...

Dammit, I promised myself a rant-free-day today.

Wave *coughbiatchcough* and Tam, stop egging me on!

Kris said...

PS - He's completely unworthy of the goodness that is Adrien!

Emeraldjaguar said...

Holy shite! Forgetted this one was in my TBR pile. Somebody keeps sending me more books to read...Chihuahua menages and fluffy chicks and stuff.

jessewave said...

Kris
You need to breathe. Jake can leave his shoes under my bed any time he wants but unfortunately he's now a fully fledged openly gay man so I don't think I have a chance. Pity!

Emmy
You need to have an audit done on your books. If Josh finds out that you still haven't read the book he sent you for Christmas he'll be upset.

Emeraldjaguar said...

*snorts* That would require Josh to actually SEND me my Xmas pressie. His kitchen table is holding it hostage, and negotiations with the crisis team have stalled...

Kris said...

Okay deep breaths and being completely serious now.

I was wondering - if it’s not too late, Wave - if you could ask Josh the following as part of his interview...

If there is to be another book in the Adrien English (the sweetie) series, would you consider the following storylines:

a) revealing Adrien’s secret black belt and having him kick Jake’s arse because of all the hurt he’s caused,

b) Adrien telling Jake he’s found someone else and kicking him to the curb,

c) exploring Jake’s long-denied (let’s face it this would NOT be new for Jake) submissive tendencies and having Adrien put him through his paces, and/or

d) killing Jake off completely because some readers think he’s a total prick.

Emeraldjaguar said...

LOLZ Kris. He'll be here tomorrow. Ask him yourself. *gets out riot gear, jic*

jessewave said...

Kris
You're right about Jake and ... prick. He does have one.
The rest? As Emmy said he'll be on the blog tomorrow and you'll have every opportunity to ask him about Jake (politely, of course) since he's talking about villains. Don't you feel better now *g*

Personally I think he's a hunk. I should ask Anne to come up with a pic of Jake to put on the blog. I'll surprise you one Friday :)

Emmy
I'm very sorry that Josh didn't send you a Christmas present. I thought you two were the best of friends.

Emeraldjaguar said...

Jake is a tool.

Josh doesn't love me anymore. There was the whole thing with TA and I told him it didn't mean anything but he didn't believe me and now...*sob*

No. Love.

Kris said...

I'm starting to think that it's prob'ly a good thing I will be sleeping for most of Wave's interview with Josh.

God forbid that I become the target of hate mail from losers... sorry... poor misguided fools... umm... delusional and rabid Jake fans... oh deary me... I mean, of course, folk like Wave.

Emmy, I'm assuming you are refering to Jake being an instrument of sheer evil. If that's the case, thank f*** I won't be alone tomorrow.

Lily said...

Great review as always. I've had this for awhile in my TBR and will have to, once again, switch things around to read this. Sounds really good.

Looking forward to reading Josh's post tomorrow.

Lily

jessewave said...

Hi Lily
What can I say? As usual Josh put together all the elements of an excellent story and came up a winner.

Kris
Tomorrow I'm not interviewing Josh. He's posting a piece about villains and he hopes that interested bloggers, like yourself, will comment on it. He will, of course, respond to the comments.

I thought this might be an opportunity for you to ask about Jake since you've cast him in the role of the villain. *g*

I really enjoyed the mystery in this book and didn't guess who the murderer was. I also liked the creepy atmosphere - a bit like Agatha Christie crossed with Amytiville!

I wasn't wholly convinced about the romance though. I loved the character of Perry and found him refreshingly different to many m/m characters around today. His fragile exterior belied his determined and, occasionally, manipulative interior. The main problem was in the way Nick viewed Perry as almost like a child. I kept wanting to shout "He's a man, not a boy!". This carried on until just up to the end when things resolved themselves, but it did make me feel uncomfortable with the relationship for most of the book.

jessewave said...

Hi Jenre
I understand what you mean about Nick's view of Perry, but I think it had a lot to do with his frail appearance, poor health and look of helplessness which belied his tough, manipulative nature. At one point Perry did tell Nick in no uncertain terms "I'm not a kid" which did it for me and I began to see him differently, as did Nick I believe.

The mystery on the other hand as you mentioned was pure Agatha Christie (I'm a huge fan and have read all her books) and it took me a long time to figure out the villain, mostly by a process of elimination.

Josh will be on the blog later today to talk about villains, and if you have the time you might want to chat with him about that as well as Perry's character in TGWYS.

thelastaerie said...

you're so right, Wave... about wanting to solve Josh's mysteries. I love that it remains a challenge and even if I have an idea of who it might be, the how and why would still surprise me.

I love this book and I think this is a brilliant "alpha & beta" male romance. Bonus is the alpha is almost a "reluctant" hero :P I love that Perry (although I kind of LOL at the name at first! I mean... how gay is that??) is vulnerable but he also has a great sense of pride and he's rather self-reliant and Nick is all alpha male but there are also heartbreaking tenderness from him. Again, really great characterisation, the same with other characters.

Oooh... it's Thursday already right (in Europe it is!)

jessewave said...

Hi Eve
Yes it is Thursday at 10:00 A.M. where you are - unfortunately it's 5:00 A.M. here in Toronto.

Josh almost had me with this one - usually I'm much better. It's either he's taking lessons or I'm not as good as I used to be. He loves his apha and beta (Adrien and Jake) and Perry reminded me a lot of Adrien especially with the asthma *g* (not a life threatening illness but sufficiently debilitating).

Looking forward to seeing you on the blog later today since you're such a great fan :)

Josh Lanyon said...

Thanks for a great review, Wave. As I told you offline, I was happy to keep you guessing on this one. I'm always shooting for that exact balance of murder and relationship.

This one was a lot of fun to write -- I enjoy exploring the facets of characters, peeling back the layers and ideally surprising the reader a little.

Josh Lanyon said...

The main problem was in the way Nick viewed Perry as almost like a child. I kept wanting to shout "He's a man, not a boy!".

I see what you're saying, Jenre. That's one reason why I had Nick ask Perry's age early on, so that everyone (the reader and Nick) understand that he's NOT seventeen. I think Nick deliberately thinks of him as a kid so that it's easier to distance himself. Until Perry won't put up with it any longer.

Josh Lanyon said...

Thanks, Eve. You're too kind as always. PERRY. Yes. I got a smile out of that one myself.

jessewave said...

You're up early today Josh. I waited until 10.00 A.M. to post "Man in a Black Hat". Thanks for responding to Emmy and Kris especially. They're driving me crazy.

You did keep me guessing with this one but next time it won't be so easy. :)

I super luurrve Josh's work and I'm really eager to read this. I have it in my TBB pile for Feb -- oh, that's Sunday, isn't it? Yippee! -- and I'll be starting it first thing after the Super Bowl (go Steelers!). I would have purchased it before now, but I gotta make sure I stick to my monthly book budget or I'll be eating boxed mac and cheese all month!

Josh Lanyon said...

Thanks, Aunt Lynn. I hope you enjoy it! I hear you on the sticking to a budget thing.

Kris said...

Josh, Jake sucks. Just saying. *cheeky grin*

Wave, it's beautiful the way you love me and Emmy. Truly beautiful. *wipes tear from eye*

jessewave said...

I will ignore the comment about Jake and forgive you.

I do love both you and Emmy, although in her case it's a little more difficult b/c she can be really trying. But I have hope that there will be an evolution some day.:)

Emeraldjaguar said...

Wave...despite your girl crush fantasies, it's just not going to work out between us. It's not me, it's you *g*. Besides, Josh loves me muchly so...neener neener.

Mary M. said...

Five out of five, that sounds pretty good. :-D I love Josh's mystery stories, especially the longer ones. I already had this one on my wish list, I'll push it up a little.

I too thought of Agatha Christie when I read your description of the atmosphere and the quirky characters all with possible murder motivation. She's one of my favorites. Too bad I can't seem to guess the murderer's identity to save my life. The only time I can remember it happening in the last...years, was during an Agatha Christie mystery play I say this summer. I was the most surprised person in the room when I realized that I was right. Lol.

I must tell Kris that I respectfully hope Josh is going to ignore all her suggestions about Jake's fate in the next AE book. I like my Jake, even if he's being a prick. He did a lot to redeem himself in DOAPK. Although...mmmm... maybe a LITTLE black belt ass-kicking wouldn't hurt.

Great review Wave. :)

jessewave said...

Emmy
Josh doesn't love you more - you're just more annoying so he has to pay you more attention *g*

Mary
I definitely enjoyed this book and almost didn't solve it before the big "reveal". He's getting too smart for me.

He did say that there would be no menage so that's something to be thankful for *g*

Mary M. said...

Lol. It's a big something to be thankful for. :D I already can't wait for the next AE book in the series. I started yearning for it as soon as I realized there was less than half of DOAPK left to read.

jessewave said...

Mary
You have about 1,000 print books - I'm not sure you need book 5 in the AE series yet.*g*

Counting the books in the basement and the two big full bags of books to ship to the UBS, I actually have more than 1000. But believe me, there's always a spot to be found for one more quality book :-p
